Report on the First West Chadic Language Workshop

Report on the First West Chadic Language Workshop, held in Jos, 20-21st April, 2012

 Roger Blench

A workshop was held in Jos, 20-21st April, 2012, to bring together speakers of West Chadic languages, especially those concerned with either developed or potential orthographies. In practice, most of the languages represented were A3 languages. Speakers of the following languages attended;

As well as a survey team from Language Development Facilitators, staff of TCNN and a deputation from the Department of Linguistics, Nassarawa State University were also in attendance. More details of the programme are on the attached pdf. The workshop was used as an opportunity to record basic sociolinguistic and lexical data for lesser-known languages, including Ywom, Takas, Mushere and Cakfem. Video interviews with speakers were also recorded to introduce the languages and to make a plea for outside assistance with language development. These will be posted on Roger Blench’s YouTube page shortly. Continue reading “Report on the First West Chadic Language Workshop”

Chadic links collection: feel free to contribute

I have started collecting my own list, using the social bookmarking service Del.icio.us.

In one of the first posts, I mentioned Web resources for African Languages, a private website run by Jouni F. Maho. There, one can find links to online materials on many Chadic languages, including articles, dictionaries, sound files and word lists. It is organised by subgroups and languages and it keeps growing. If you look for any Chadic online materials, it is the first place to check.

I have started collecting my own list, using the social bookmarking service Del.icio.us. My own Chadic links can be found at http://del.icio.us/chadicnewsletter.

Maybe you have already noticed the new section titled “Chadic Links“. Feel free to contribute to this list. In order to do this, all you have to do is open an account with Del.icio.us (which is free of charge) and save your own Chadic links there. It would be great if we could build up a larger collection together.

Unpublished Data and Reports

The following unpublished data and reports can be downloaded from http://www.uni-bayreuth.de/afrikanistik/cnl/unpublished/index.html:

Thanks go to SIL and Roger Blench who provided these data.

SIL Electronic Survey Reports

Information about some very poorly documented Chadic languages has been in published in SIL Electronic Survey Reports. Here is a description of the contents of the series found on their website:

SIL Electronic Survey Reports (SILESR) are published by SIL International (Dallas, Texas). The series publishes reports on sociolinguistic surveys carried out by SIL field members and others. They are usually preliminary work papers and not presented as polished research. They are based on field notes and are in some cases the work of young sociolinguists with minimal training.

Here are reports on Chadic languages found in this series:

Check for other languages.

At Web resources for African Languages, a private website run by Jouni F. Maho, one can find links to online materials on many Chadic languages, including articles, dictionaries, sound files and word lists.

In the next few days, we will have a look at some of the materials found on this website in more detail.
